Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg in 2004. It is a social networking site that anyone thirteen years or older can join. Since its creation, the site has grown to over 300 million users.
Communication – 5 Stars
Facebook has multiple ways for users to communicate with each other. There is a Facebook inbox, which works as an e-mail function. There is also a ‘wall’ which your associated users can leave you messages. Finally, Facebook has an instant messaging feature, which allows you to converse with other users while they are also on the site. Facebook can also help you organize events or join groups that share similar interests as you.
Profile/ File Sharing – 5 Stars
Creating your profile is easy on Facebook. The user will type their name, email address, password, gender, and birth date on the homepage. Afterwards, any follow-up information is sorted into four categories: basic, personal, contact information, and an education and work sub-category.
Facebook allows users to upload files and images or view their friends files/ images. Users can share notes, photos, videos, music and movie interests, even bumper stickers.
Applications – 5 Stars
The applications on Facebook are abundant. There are hundreds of quizzes asking if you act your age, have a dirty mind, or how long you’ll survive a zombie invasion. Facebook also has games like scrabble or UNO, as well as applications to create a family tree or a profile for your dog.
Customization – 1 Star
This is where Facebook falls flat on its face. You basically cannot customize your page at all. You’re stuck with the same white and blue background as everyone else. However, most people are fine with the standard (and only) option, which is why Facebook doesn’t completely fail in this category.
Notifications – 4 Stars
Facebook sends messages to your email address regarding friend requests or comments that your friends may leave you. There is also a pickett sign icon in the lower right hand corner of the window to show your notifications. However, Facebook loses points in this category, because it tells you EVERYTHING your friends are doing.
With 20/25 Stars, Facebook is the site to beat. If you wish to join the other 300 million, click here.
